In Colônia de São Pedro Z-3, located in the extreme south of Brazil, a land governed by harvests, families rely on fishing and handicrafts for their livelihood. A group of artisans called Redeiras turns trash into art, recycling shrimp fishing nets into art. Around 5 thousand people live there, the families' daily lives revolve around the waters of the beautiful Laguna dos Patos.
The fishing nets are collected by the artisans themselves who select and wash the material. After processing, the net is cut into yarn, dyed and transformed into skeins. The whole process is reading and manual. The thread is woven on the loom or macramé, forming the fabric that is then hand embroidered.
The Oiamo project, started in 2022, is based on research carried out in immersions carried out by designer Tiago Braga with collectives of artisans, experiencing their daily lives, identifying and rescuing the creative potentials of their ancestral wisdom and the handling of raw materials.
Based on participant observation, the designer interprets and updates this knowledge by creating small collections of Memory Objects. The material and immaterial elements that result from this co-creation process are made to dress the home: a living space that houses original objects and elements, full of ancestry.
