Mixed on canvas
Several possible worlds are portrayed in José Gonçalves’ painting. Its characters and settings seem to exist on a fine line between reality and fiction, anonymity and memory. They are views filtered through the artist's own story, which he invites us to inhabit by showing images that seem to be taken from films, posters and fragments of common imagination - references that shine on the stage of his own trajectory. The contrasts and subtle dilution of forms are clear in his works, the result of a brush that builds this universe in constant speed and transformation, challenging our memory capacity. Sometimes, these forms dismantle and produce abstract fields, without recognizable elements, but with an eternal tone of familiarity, whether due to the color or the movement it produces in each detailed canvas. Anyway, José Gonçalves' painting may come from his story, but it is one in which he lets us participate
